As Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary approaches, Talasea District is rising to the occasion with a heartfelt celebration of heritage, unity, and youth empowerment.
Stringband Festival: A Cultural Revival
In a beautiful nod to tradition, Talasea is launching the Talasea District String Band Festival, a vibrant showcase of local music and identity. The festival will tour four sites across the district:
- Unea Secondary School (Bali Island) – 06/09/25
- Paruru Station (Vitu Island) – 8/09/25
- Komawawo (mainland Talasea) – 10/09/25
- Kilu Village (Ward 3) – 12/09/25
- Kulungi (Ward 2) – 15/09/25

This musical procession will culminate in a grand finale at Kulungi Village, on September 15, held at the Gabriel Bakani mini-stadium. The festival not only entertains but also reminds Talasea people of their rich cultural heritage, especially through the artistry of stringband music. Member for Talasea, Hon. Freddie Reu Kumai, has personally backed the initiative—providing musical instruments to local youth groups and encouraging them to embrace this musical tradition that binds the community.
Celebrating at the District Level
Kulungi Village, a symbolic staging ground near the heart of the district, has been selected to host the main Independence event. This choice underscores the district’s commitment to community-centered celebrations and ensuring local voices are front and center during national commemorations.
