The Republic of the Marshall Islands announced today protection of two of the country’s remote and northernmost isles, untouched havens of biodiversity sheltering the nation’s largest green turtle nesting colony and deep-sea sharks. The country’s first national marine sanctuary — which covers 48,000 square kilometers (18,500 square miles) of water — is an exceedingly rare glimpse into a pristine part of the Pacific Ocean.
