According to Vatican News, Pope Francis has approved decrees for the canonization of Blessed Peter To Rot, a martyred layman from Papua New Guinea. Pope St. John Paul II beatified him on January 17, 1995, in Port Moresby. Beatification is the first step toward sainthood.

In a 1985 Post-Courier interview with IaPaula, the wife of the Late Blessed Peter To Rot, Catholic faithfuls remarked, “To be sure, the process of declaring To Rot a Catholic saint will take a long time—anywhere from 25 to hundreds of years.”

Now, 40 years later, in the year of Papua New Guinea’s Golden Jubilee, Blessed Peter To Rot has been approved for canonization.
