Provincial Sports Unit

Overview

The Provincial Sports Unit is established to coordinate and oversee the implementation of sports events in WNBP, while coordinating the engagement of provincial teams competing at regional and national levels. It also focuses on enhancing coaching and sport officiating standards and development of athletes who excel or have potential to excel in sport. The Unit operates within the broader framework of PNG Sports Foundation Act 2006 (2022 Amendments) and the National Sports Policy 2004, with its responsibilities that mirror the broader structure of provincial sports organizations.

Key Responsibilities

The Provincial Sports Unit is Responsible for:

  • Coordinating provincial sporting events and competitions
  • Selecting and preparing provincial teams for regional and national competitions
  • Working with local sporting associations and clubs
  • Recruiting and training coaches, officials, and volunteers at provincial level
  • Providing guidance, training, and support to athletes
  • Facilitating grassroots participation in sports through LLG and District Games
  • Managing provincial sports facilities and infrastructure
  • Serving as liaison between local communities and the national sports governing body
  • Conducting a sports survey to identify active and inactive Sports Associations and provide necessary support.

Programs & Services

The Provincial Sports Unit delivers the following programs and services:

  1. Sports Coordination
  • Overseeing the Coordination and Implementation of LLGs and District Games, such as Sport Unity Games.
  • Coordinate the Implementation of Provincial Games.
  • Facilitate the selection and recruitment of sport officials, coaches, and athletes who make up the composition of provincial teams to compete at regional and national games.
  • Coordinate the participation of provincial teams competing at regional and national games.
  • Consulting and cooperating with appropriate authorities of the National Government, Provincial and Local-level Governments, and with other persons, associations, and organizations on matters related to the activities of Sports Foundation.
  • Sports Development
  • Developing and implementing programs that promote equality of access to and participation in sport by all interested individuals within the province.
  • Developing and implementing programs to recognize and develop person(s) who excels or have the potential to excel in sport.
  • Training of sport officials and coaches to supervise and manage relevant sporting codes at the Provincial, District, and LLGs.

Structure & Leadership

The Provincial Sports Unit is headed by Director of Sports, who oversees and manages the unit’s core programs and services to improve and strengthen sports in the province, enabling individuals to enhance their physical fitness, mental fitness, and skills for career opportunities in sports. The Director, with assistance from its subordinates, perform the following key functions:

  • Sports Development
